North Country folk art is surprisingly diverse. This schoolhouse is a great example of traditional local architecture.

Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people understand and appreciate the folk traditions and local culture of everyday life - present and past -- in the North Country.

To do so, TAUNY seeks to research and preserve a record of diverse groups, customs and traditions; to recognize and empower traditional arts and artists; to identify and promote regional identity; and to provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn about folklore and local culture.

This website--North Country Folklore Online--has been created by Traditional Arts in Upstate New York [TAUNY] as an introductory resource of educational materials about folklore, folk culture and traditional arts of the North Country of New York State, the 14 counties north of Albany and the Mohawk River. Our particular goal is to make this sampler of local traditional cultural expressions available to students, teachers, and community organizations throughout our region and beyond.

The materials published herein have come from nearly 30 years worth of taped interviews, photographs, video recordings and other materials in the constantly-growing TAUNY Archives in Canton. They have been generated by TAUNY folklorists for projects like radio productions, traveling exhibits or publications and from collections of regional materials donated by other folklorists and college students. These extensive files are available for use at the TAUNY Gallery by appointment and with approval of appropriate TAUNY staff.

All materials appearing in this site-printed texts, photographic images, and audio modules-are protected by copyright registered by Traditional Arts in Upstate New York. While original materials have been deposited in the TAUNY Archives with signed releases, actual ownership of the words and images remains with our sources or their heirs.
